website updates
I spent some time this morning to make some minor tweaks to this website's appearance.
- Added padding & modified width for better visuals and readability
- Increased line height for better readability
- Left-justified and (visibly) bulleted the ramblings and links pages
- Converted the front page "Howdy" image to .webp format for further space savings
Since this is a static site, I had the lovely privilege of manually editing each individual page. All pages received the width & padding change while past ramblings were excluded from the line height change because I didn't want to.
Some changes I will be considering for the future:
- Move away from GIFs and toward emojis (or unicode symbols) for further space savings (I want that green team badge)
- this will also remove reliance on archive.org/gifcities
- Add a Contact page to replace the email gif at the bottom of all pages
- I would likely skip this change on old ramblings, because I think it's fun to see how things used to look
As I was going through these changes, I checked out Bear Blog which seems like an AWESOME platform that maintains my desires to not have javascript and have a small-sized website. I will be considering switching, it will add RSS to my blog but will also cost $3 more per month.
Afternoon Edit:
I didn't have much happening today so I just went ahead and made these edits detailed below:
- The fun GIFs are gone on all navigation pages and all future ramblings. They will remain on this page as a comparison!
- Admittedly more boring, changing to 16x16 icons (in addition to other changes) allowed the front page size to be reduced to 39.7kB from the previous 226kB (an 82.4% decrease!)
- This means this website qualifies for the 512kB club green team (sites <100kB in size)!
- I wanted to use unicode instead of image files, but for some reason it just was not working. Even though the HTML document correctly listed the character, it would not display correctly on a browser. Yes, my document is set to UTF-8
- Created new "Howdy" image
- I will be sticking with .webp format for the main page
- For now there is still no Now/About page
- Added easter egg
